You’re Not Prepared For ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ — Here’s Our Review!

You are not prepared for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Early in the movie, Luke Skywalker issues a line fans will be quoting into eternity, “This isn’t going to go the way you think.” In retrospect, that line plays like the mantra of a movie that twists in unexpected places, challenges viewers throughout and takes its characters on journeys you couldn’t have dreamed up.

Without spoiling anything, here’s our review of what you can expect from Star Wars: The Last Jedi:

THE RESISTANCE

With only a few ships remaining in the New Republic fleet, the Resistance (led by General Leia Organa, Captain Poe Dameron, Finn, and newcomers Rose Tico and Admiral Holdo) flees the First Order. Their plan? A secretive mission to recruit a shadowy hacker on a cool new planet called Canto Bight.

What to Expect: You’ll get to spend some extended time with the non Force users for a change, rooting for them as they face long odds and dangerous foes.

THE FIRST ORDER

After decimating the New Republic in The Force Awakens, the First Order has become the ultimate power in the galaxy. That group (led by Supreme Leader Snoke, Kylo Ren and General Hux) spends most of the movie in an epic chase down of the last remaining ships in the New Republic fleet.

What to Expect: Lots of aerial dogfights and some great tension between the leaders of the First Order.

REY AND LUKE

Rey has discovered Ahch-To, the hiding place of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. She makes her pitch to bring Luke out of exile and back to the fight against the Dark Side. Imagine Luke’s training scenes in The Empire Strikes Back crossed with Anakin first learning about the Force in The Phantom Menace.

What to Expect: This is the movie’s most secretive and shocking section. All I can say is that you’ll finally get to learn more about “Old Man Luke” and fill in some of the gaps in his history since you last saw him in Return of the Jedi.

These three storylines, of course, intersect and merge in interesting ways, and to say they don’t go as expected is an understatement. That’s where this movie really shines.

Here are five unexpected things to watch for in Star Wars: The Last Jedi:

1. LAUGHS

In the first 10 minutes of the movie, there’s an exchange involving Poe Dameron that might be the funniest scene in Star Wars history. And the comedy never lets up. Finn, BB-8, Leia, the Porgs and even Luke have plenty of hilarious moments.

2. SPECIAL EFFECTS

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we finally get to see Supreme Leader Snoke up close. Snoke might be the best-looking CGI character to ever appear on a movie screen. And it wouldn’t be a Star wars movie without some incredible moments in space. There is at least one space-set scene that rivals any other sci-fi movie.

3. THE FORCE

After eight Star Wars movies, including Rogue One, you might have thought you’d seen everything the Force had to offer. You’re wrong. In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there are several new force tricks and attacks that are as bold as they are surprising. And, the movie isn’t scared to go in new places, too.

4. NEW CREATURES

Between the Porgs, Caretakers, Fathiers, Crystal Foxes and the wacky aliens on Casino Bight, this movie might have the most diverse offering of creatures in any of the Star Wars movies.

5. ONE MAJOR SURPRISE

This one’s so secretive you just get one hint: It involves Luke Skywalker and a person, place or thing from his past. This reveal is so unexpected that the entire theater gasped when it first appeared.

  1. Since I am the first to comment, I would like to ask everyone to keep the comments spoiler-free so people who haven’t seen the movie yet can look through them without worrying.

  2. I got to say that I think know something about Kylo Ren. I think he is going to kill Leia and then be a in-between guy. Neither good nor bad. Basing off of the previews and The Force Awakens.

  3. I’m one of those who read most of the now out-dated Star Wars books, where Luke Skywalker acts heroically time after time. I’m concerned this movie is going to neuter Luke Skywalker, turning him into a basically powerless recluse afraid to confront the dark side of the force.

  4. Still love episodes 1-6. I didn’t like episode 7. But I will say episode 8 was good, but only good and it was better than episode 7. If you want a good story line read the Timothy Zahn trilogy it is a better story line of what happens after episode 6.
