Journey Complete

Plastiki, a boat built out of recyclable plastic bottles, has completed its four-month journey across the Pacific Ocean. Expedition leader David de Rothschild used 12,500 plastic bottles in creating the vessel. Solar panels and windmills power Plastiki. Organic glue made of sugar cane and cashews holds the boat together.

The 60-foot boat left San Francisco on March 20, and it arrived safely in Sydney, Australia, this week. De Rothschild led this expedition to raise awareness of pollution and its effect on our environment. He originally planned to dismantle and recycle Plastiki after the journey, but he’s now considering keeping it intact and using the boat to “enlighten people to the power of recycling.”
