More than 70 percent of Earth is covered in oceans, but what’s below them has mostly been a mystery … until now. NASA recently unveiled the most complete map of the seafloor ever, revealing thousands of previously uncharted features.

To make the map, NASA collected data with satellites, altimeters and other remote sensing instruments that scanned the oceans to measure for depth and formations. The detail of the map is especially impressive, capturing mountains, crevices, tectonic plates and volcanoes as never seen before.
