World’s Largest Cobra Found

A new species of cobra has been identified as the world’s largest spitting cobra. Discovered in Kenya, this species is called Naja ashei after James Ashe, who founded the snake farm on which the cobra was found.

Growing up to 15 feet, this type of cobra is known for spitting venom from the mouth to protect against predators. The venom is harmless on human skin, but it can cause blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes.

According to WildlifeDirect, how many Naja ashei — or Large Brown Spitting Cobras as they are commonly classified — exist in the wild is not currently known. In East Africa, venomous snakes are generally killed on sight.
