Recently we asked you all to submit questions that you would love to see answered here at Heads Up. Today, we’ve got the first answer in this new series called ASK US ANYTHING.
Reader Bryan asks, “Hey Heads Up, who would win between Jason Bourne and James Bond?”
First of all, great question! Let’s start with a quick bio of each guy.
Jason Bourne
Bourne is a former American spy and Captain in the U.S. Army Special Forces. While working for the Central Intelligence Agency, Bourne endured behavioral modification that shaped him into a one-man killing machine. He became highly trained in martial arts, firearms, explosives, handling numerous vehicles and can speak fluent English, French, Dutch, Russian, German, Spanish, Czech, Polish, Portuguese and Italian. He’s quick-thinking, has a photographic memory and often uses improvised weapons. That said, he’s a lone wolf. Bourne is on the run from the CIA, and has no assistance from government agencies, meaning he is severely lacking in weapons, gear and gadgets.
James Bond
Bond is a British superspy working for MI6, England’s version of the CIA. He’s often thought of as the top spy in all of England, and was once called the best marksman in MI6. Even so, Bond has been proven beatable in a few areas, including, driving, hand-to-hand combat and underwater swimming. and golf. But what he lacks physically he makes up for in experience and resources. Bond is generally thought of as a 40-year-old with more than 15 years experience. He’s also in good standing with MI6, and is equipped with the world’s best and more high-tech weapons, gadgets and gear.
This question is more complex than it seems, because it depends on the manner in which these two superspys meet. Bourne typically fights with hand-to-hand combat, whereas Bond goes for the brutal, intense gun battle. Both men are top-notch, near Olympic-quality athletes and are a match in terms stamina. So, a physical showdown would be close.
That’s why we think this battle would come down to one thing. Mentality.
James Bond chose to be a spy, working hard to become one of the world’s toughest men. He’s proven to be mentally tough and unrelenting. Jason Bourne was tricked into his service, undergoing a memory-washing process that turned him into an emotionally-damaged amnesiac. While he’s focused, and tough-as-nails, he suffers from flashbacks and painful emotional baggage.
Our winner? James Bond, for the simple fact that he is more experienced, more in control and better prepared.

That’s totally wrong. Bourne being tricked into service is exactly why he would win. He has close to no conscience when fighting, and is a practical, ruthless killing machine. While Bond was trained as a spy, Bourne was trained as an assassin.
Bourne hands down
I agree with you Da egl scout.
I think that Jason Bourne would win just because he’s younger, and in my opinion, much more athletic. He’s also more awesome… I mean, have you ever seen James Bond use a pen for a knife?!!
Thanks for answering so quickly! I think you guys got it right! Unless bond was caught by surprise in which case I think Bourne would win in H to H combat.
i agree, bond has a laser pen.
Jason would win he is just that much better.
This is my take on the Bond (3/4) v.s. Bourne thing (4/4 Points).
Bourne wins, but only by a small margin:
1) Physically – Fistycuffs, knife fight and or long protracted chase on foot.
Bourne = winner – Bond is great at hand to hand, but is not all doped up like Bourne and is a chain smoker in the books! Bourne would have faster reflexes, have more endurance and and be stronger. Though Bond might have technique on his side, I don’t think it would be enough to beat Bourne.
2) Thinking quickly to get out of a tough spot – general mental acuity.
Bond and Bourne = Draw – both are great at thinking fast, Bond being a natural and Bourne being all doped up to be cleverer.
3) Evading bad guys or each other in a car chase
Bond and Bourne = Draw – both are expert drivers, though Bourne would probably have the faster relexes, bond is experienced, is a natural and would probably have a faster car from Q.
4) Sniper duel.
Bond and Bourne = Draw – both are expert marksmen, both have had experience, so would probably shoot each other dead in the eye through the scopes.
Hey Dave,
Great analysis. You may be right, and it would likely be a close match either way. I’d still side with Bond, only because of his legendary status as a skilled assassin, his mountain of experience and his much better arsenal of gear and weaponry. That said, put them in a boxing ring or MMA octagon, I’d absolutely go with Bourne.
Hey Boys’ Life,
Being British, I’m naturally bias for Bond and Daniel Craig’s Bond proves that he doesn’t actually need all that fancy gadgetry to win. After Casio Royale, you hardly see him use any funky gadgets to give him any great advantage.
Bond wins on the count of saving the world, as Bourne has yet to save the world even once
!
Taking this new extra category into account, we have a new winner: James Bond wins by 1 point with 5 points v.s. Jason Bourne’s respectable 4 points.
Bond has saved the world many times already.
OK you are right, I concur, Bond is the new victor.
Though Bourne might level the score if we added fieldcraft in urban and wilderness environs etc (Bond would stand out like a sore thumb in his tailored suit LOL)….
Dave check out my comment below.
Thinks about this for a second. While Bond uses laser pens and all this fancy stuff to take down bad guys, in one part in the bourne movies Jason beats up a guy with a book in combat lets say that again….. A BOOK! And lets say spy stuff is old fashioned.
Also Bond uses all these fancy cars while bourne wins a battle car chase with a taxi instead of a Bonds 1950s luxury car . Go Bourne. P.S i like Bourne’s plot and action better than Bond boy.
Bond could pull it off. He is smart, so he could think up a strategy
Bourne definitely no need to stand up for Bond although we all love him but in this situation he goes to shame. Seeing as though Bourne went through masses of government agents and tricked The C.I.A he could totally handle MI6. Sure Bond is ” In Good standing with MI6, and is equipped with the world’s best and more high-tech weapons, gadgets and gear ” But he wouldn’t get to use that against Bourne after all he killed a guy with a pen after the guy jumped in the window with a gun. Plus as in Quantum of Solace Bond proved what a losely held together emotional wreck he is. Although Bond is everyone’s favorite spy he’d lose drastically.
Komodo Dragon vs Honey Badger
Good one! Discuss! Both can be feisty.
