A leaping whale crashed into a boat this week off the coast of South Africa, leaving two sailors fighting for their lives. Paloma Werner and Ralph Mothes were whale-watching from a distance when the giant mammal rose out of the water and crashed into the side of their boat.
Werner and Mothes took refuge behind the boat’s steering wheel. The mast and its rigging were destroyed by the whale’s impact, but the boat remained afloat. The whale appeared to be unhurt.
