NASA’s New Spacesuits Look Familiar

NASA’s new concept spacesuit, the first in 20 years, bears a striking resemblance to Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear. The Z-1 suit even has matching green trim.

Currently astronauts spend up to an hour dressing in their spacesuits, but the new Z-1 will change that. Astronauts will be able to climb into it as quickly as any other outfit. And the features will be much improved, according to NASA.

Judging by the photo, the only items that it’s missing are the wings and laser.

Go vote for the final design of this awesome spacesuit.

  1. Awesome! This looks less puffy than the traditional space suit. It’s nice to see NASA isn’t just sitting around idle after getting rid of the space shuttle program. I’m excited to see what spacesuits come next!

    • Good point, yodaTroop163. I hadn’t thought of that. It’s good to be able to see the faces of these heroic astronauts. Although, I’m sure there will be some sort of shading device in the future.

    • Hey Matt,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Most likely this cave was formed by melted water that carved it’s way through the glacier, hollowing out the tunnel/cave. So originally, when the ice formed, the cave wasn’t there. It was just formed over time as warmer water seeped through.

  2. This space suit is awesome but I wonder how much it will cost. The older models costed NASA about $12,000,000 and careful outfitting and measurements on each spaceman suit and I’d bet that the newer ones are better meaning that they will cost more.
