The bald eagle is back!

baldeagle.jpgThe bald eagle has rebounded from the brink of extinction. The U.S. government has removed it from the list of federally protected species.

In 1963 there were only 417 nesting pairs in the United States. Today, there are 9,789 breeding pairs in the lower 48 states.

Because the U.S. national symbol was hunted and humans migrated west its habitat declined.

Due to the decline the U.S. Congress passed the Bald Eagle Protection Act in 1940, which made it illegal to shoot at, kill, or poison the birds.

Conservationists view the eagle’s recovery as a success story that proves the U.S. Endangered Species Act really does work.
