Submarine Reef

A former U.S. Navy ship was intentionally sunk Wednesday to create a reef near the Cayman Islands. The USS Kittiwake, a submarine rescue ship built in 1945, now rests 62 feet below the ocean’s surface in clear water. The ship’s 47-foot height makes it easily accessible to snorkelers and divers.

Crews carefully punched holes in the hull and used large pumps to pipe in seawater. The purpose: to make sure the ship landed upright on the ocean floor. That mission was accomplished. The sunken vessel should attract both tourists and fish.
