Earlier this year, the 1792 “Birch Cent,” named after engraver Robert Birch, sold for $2.6 million at a Florida auction. It’s one of the earliest known coins in American history. According to a Coin World report, the one-cent piece was: “among the first pennies struck for the United States, part of a series of prototype coins. Only 10 are believed to exist.”
