Fireproof Tasmanian Devils

Flame retardants may be causing cancer in some Australian Tasmanian Devils. Researchers announced last week that the chemical might be linked to a mysterious cancer that has been killing the rare animal for the past decade.

The fireproof chemical causes a disease known as fatal devil facial-tumor disease (DFTD). Tasmanian Devils stricken with DFTD suffer from disfiguring tumors on their faces and necks. These tumors cause them to die within about six months of the first symptoms.
