If you love sci-fi and adventure movies, Earth to Echo is the summer movie for you.

Earth to Echo focuses on a group of friends who begin receiving a strange series of signals on their phones. Convinced something bigger is going on, they team up with another school friend, Emma, and set out to look for the source of their phone signals. What they discover is something beyond their wildest imaginations: a small alien who has become stranded on Earth. In need of their help, the four friends come together to protect the alien and help him find his way home.

Check out the trailer below:

And while Earth to Echo won’t hit theaters until July 2, I’ve got an interview with one of the stars today.

M-261_1165415-year-old Reese Hartwig stars as Munch in the movie, and recently he took some time away from making movies to chat with me about movies, cars and acting.

Congratulations on Earth To Echo. Can you tell us a bit about the film?
Thank you!  The movie is about the bonds of friendship and camaraderie as four friends deal with something beyond their imaginations. The movie is shot like a found footage type movie as it follows my friends and I through a sci-fi adventure, helping an alien get home.

What’s your character like?
“Munch” is a clever, nervous, and cautious kid who deals with life like a boy scout does; always be prepared. Sometimes he takes things a bit far like being a hoarder to make sure he has everything he could possibly need, just in case, but his intentions are always good and he really cares for his friends. It was so much fun playing Munch in “Earth To Echo”!

What was it like working with all of those special effects?
The fake explosions and the animatronic alien, “Echo” were super cool. Legacy did the real effects and they are the guys who have done all my favorite movies like Aliens and the Terminator movies. This is the kind of stuff that every kid wants to play with — under adult supervision of course.

How did you get your start in the acting business?
My dad is in the business; he supplies movie cars to the studios and we would tag along to set sometimes.  This one time on the set of Will Smith’s film, Hancock they were filming the bank robbery scene, and I really got to see the whole process. It was so amazing to me, all the people and props and preparation. My brother and I knew right then we wanted in on this action. We landed our first auditions, with Ryan – my brother – getting a skateboard commercial and me getting a music video.  From then we’ve been working hard ever since.

What advice do you have for readers that may be interested in acting?
Focus on school, it’s really important and it can be very difficult keeping up worthy grades, but you have to have them to get your work permit. You’ll have to sacrifice fun things, but you get to do things almost no one else can.  You have to be ready to take a million ‘no’s before you get a ‘yes.’ But you can’t let it frustrate you. A lot of people will try and give you their opinion on what to do to succeed in this industry.  Try to stay true to what you believe is right and it will work out.

What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending my spare time with my buddy, Tristan Georgio, who is a Scout  in Valencia, California. He tells me cool stuff he gets to do with his troop and it makes me wish I could have gotten involved too. I also like airsofting, going to movies, and collecting cars from movies. Right now I have a 57 Chevy used in movies like Men in Black 3, a 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera and a General Lee from the TV series Dukes of Hazard. Now I just have to wait until I get my license later this summer.

What’s next up for you?
I play the nemesis of Alexander in Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day which comes out in October.  I’m also the voice of Jonny Quest in a Warner Bros cartoon movie coming soon. Besides that, it’s back to the grind of audition and trying to get that next fun role.
