Five oily pelicans have been rescued from the Gulf of Mexico and brought to Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo. These American white pelicans were found near the area impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Wing injuries had prevented them from migrating this past spring.
Now clean, the pelicans are scheduled for X-rays and blood work. Experts at the Brookfield Zoo will closely monitor their health, gathering data that could help other affected birds.
