Asteroid Image

The space probe Rosetta has taken the most detailed photos ever snapped of an asteroid called “Lutetia.” This asteroid was first discovered 150 years ago, appearing as “little more than a pinpoint of light to those on Earth.” At 130 kilometers in length, Lutetia was photographed in the belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Now, thanks to these new photos, we know that Lutetia is highly cratered from blows endured during its 4.5 billion years of existence. Scientists will now look closely at the images and try to determine if this minor planet is made of metal or rock.
